“Friendship bracelets in the 8th grade, I loved you since back in the day…”
“Back in the Day”, Wayne Brady

More than Jelly Shoes, more than Swatch watches… even more than super-high bangs, there was one accessory that almost every child of the 80s donned at one point. The friendship bracelet.
The snazzy little, hand-woven bands of embroidery floss were all the rage. And if you didn’t have at least, oh… eight or ten, well… you may as well have been that loser that spent all afternoon in the computer lab.
No one can say for sure where they started or how everyone learned (so quickly) to weave all those intricate patterns and designs, but there they were, stacked up our arms in more colors than a rainbow.
But not just any colors, no ma’am. Each color had its own special meaning. Red meant love. Green meant good luck. Yellow meant you like bananas. (Okay, we made that one up, but you get the idea.)
The more bracelets you had, the cooler you were. And no, you wouldn’t dream of ever taking any of them off… well, unless Becky completely started hitting on your boyfriend, and then that one little pink and green bracelet was headed for the trash. Served Becky right.
